Model of the Sun
I am putting this up as a separate post, so I can link to it on the Links blog and write it into the curriculum for space and earth science.
We have started our space studies as the first part of our new theme for the new school year, earth science. We started the with the sun and my daughter made this easy clay model.
To make it you wrap four layers of playdough (or something similar) into a ball. You need to have four colors or at least two colors to alternate. The first layer your roll into a ball. The next layers you roll out flat and wrap around the ball. When you are done layering, slice the ball in half so you can see the different layers. Make labels for the layers and attach them to toothpicks and insert!
The layers are : core, photosphere, chromosphere, corona
Your older students could try this paper model of the sun. It is very detailed and includes a minibook with lots of info.
